India's cotton production will surpass China in 5 years

According to recent reports, India is expected to overtake China as the world’s largest cotton producer by around 2015. In the 2010-2011 season, China produced approximately 45 million bales of cotton, with each bale weighing about 170 kg. India, currently the second-largest producer, generated around 33.9 million bales during the same period. The International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) has highlighted that, based on current growth trends, India's cotton output is projected to surpass China’s by 2015. This shift is largely attributed to the widespread adoption of biotechnology in Indian agriculture. A significant portion of India’s cotton farming—over 86%—relies on Bt cotton, a genetically modified variety designed to resist pests. In contrast, only about 69% of China’s cotton crops are planted with Bt technology. This technological advantage is playing a key role in boosting India’s production capacity and positioning it as a leading global player in the cotton industry.
